How it all started: 1850 - 1929

1850 – Foundation of the Mayer blacksmith shop
Paulus Mayer, an ancestor of the current company owner Klaus Mayer, founded the first blacksmith shop in Berschlingen near Ulm, Germany.

1890 – The blacksmith’s trade stays within the family
Paulus’ son Michael takes over the blacksmith heritage in 1890. His brother, Paulus Jr. enlists in the Army to be a blacksmith as well. 

1929 – Takeover of another blacksmith shop in Mergelstetten 
The grandfather of the current owner of the Mayer Group, Klaus Mayer, takes over another traditional blacksmith shop from the family estate, which will be steadily expanded in the following years. 

1929 - 1965

1958 – Georg Mayer founds a metalworking shop 
After successful business operations, Georg Mayer founds a metalworking shop in 1958 to manufacture vendor parts for agricultural and construction machinery.

1960 – Laying of the foundation stone of the current location in Mergelstetten 
After the first production years of the blacksmith shop in Itzelberg, Germany and various other shops in Mergelstetten, the first shop is built at great risk in 1960 at the present location. Complete welded constructions for tower cranes and agricultural machinery are part of the production program, which is continuously expanded. 

1965 – The company Mayer is now a quality brand for welding constructions
In 1965, the welded constructions are followed by the mechanical processing of the constructions manufactured in-house, which to this day represents an important part of the Mayer Group’s range of services.

1958 – Georg Mayer founds a metalworking shop 
After successful business operations, Georg Mayer founds a metalworking shop in 1958 to manufacture vendor parts for agricultural and construction machinery.

1960 – Laying of the foundation stone of the current location in Mergelstetten

1965 – The company Mayer is now a quality brand for welding constructions
In 1965, the welded constructions are followed by the mechanical processing of the constructions manufactured in-house, which to this day represents an important part of the Mayer Group’s range of services.

1967 - 1970

1967 – Development of the world’s first potting machine
With the world’s first potting machine specially developed for horticulture, the name Mayer and their automation solutions for horticulture have been linked inseparably since 1967.

1970 – Internationalization
After successful business operations in Germany, agencies were founded in European countries as well as in America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan from 1970 onwards.

1977 - 1993

1977 – Expansion of the company headquarters & production capacity 
To be able to meet the increasing demand, the company headquarters at the Mergelstetten location are continuously expanded in the following years. Starting with the initial expansion of the production hall in 1977 by 3,000 m², a further expansion of the production capacity in 1982/83 by 1,500 m² and an extension of the administration building in 1990 by 700 m² follow.

To be able to meet the increasing demand, the company headquarters at the Mergelstetten location are continuously expanded in the following years. Starting with the initial expansion of the production hall in 1977 by 3,000 m², a further expansion of the production capacity in 1982/83 by 1,500 m² and an extension of the administration building in 1990 by 700 m² follow.

 

1993 - 1994

1993 – Takeover of the company by Klaus Mayer 
Georg Mayer passes away at the young age of 58. A restructuring of the company becomes necessary. His son Klaus Mayer takes over sole responsibility under company law and begins to change the structure of the company.

1994 – Foundation of Mayer BT Kisfalud & Mayer HW & SW Kft Gyöngyös 
To meet the growing demand for automation solutions for commercial horticulture, the first foreign subsidiary is founded in Kisfalud, Hungary, in 1994. In the same year, this is followed by the establishment of the 2nd foreign subsidiary of Mayer HW & SW Kft. The company is focused on the development and manufacturing of switch cabinets, control technology and handling equipment such as conveyor belts.

1995 - 1996

 1995 – Construction of a 2.600 m² warehouse and a production hall in Heidenheim, Germany
Two new buildings (1250 m² and 1350 m²) are constructed. They will store the entire raw materials needed by Mayer. 

1996 – Splitting of the Mayer GmbH & Co. Apparate- und Maschinenbau 
To be able to respond more specifically to the needs of customers in the various market segments, a reorganization of the corporate structure was undertaken in 1996. This involved the establishment of Mayer GmbH & Co. Apparate- & Maschinenbau was split into the following two companies:

  • Mayer GmbH & Co. Apparatebau
  • Mayer GmbH & Co. Maschinenbau & Verwaltung

 1995 – Construction of a 2.600 m² warehouse and a production hall in Heidenheim, Germany
Two new buildings (1250 m² and 1350 m²) are constructed. They will store the entire raw materials needed by Mayer. 

1996 – Splitting of the Mayer GmbH & Co. Apparate- und Maschinenbau

1996 - 1999

1997 – New construction of a 1.500m² production hall at the Kisfalud site 
The Hungarian location is increasingly developing into a full-service provider. To meet the increasing demand, a new 1,500m² production hall was built according to Western European standards to open up further opportunities for expansion there. In addition, a new laser cutting machine (make: Trumpf L 3030 3000 W) was put into operation which, with the help of the latest technology, makes it possible to establish oneself as a company for laser and sheet metal technology in the long term.

1998/99 – Foundation of Mayer BV GmbH & Co. KG Property Management 
Through the commercial leasing of part of the existing buildings to Voith Turbe Antriebstechnik, the land and buildings owned by Klaus Mayer were transferred to Mayer BV GmbH & Co. KG GrundstĂĽcksverwaltung. This created another Mayer company.

1997 – New construction of a 1.500m² production hall at the Kisfalud site 
The Hungarian location is increasingly developing into a full-service provider. 2000/01 – Construction of the Mayer Groups new corporate headquarters

2005 - 2007

2006/2007 – Installation of further Trumpf laser cutting machines with 4000 W output

In June 2007, Mayer BT takes another step into the future. The production site in Hungary was further expanded with new laser machines from Trumpf. From November 2007, 2 Trumpf laser cutting machines TC 3030 with 3200-watt laser power and 1 Trumpf laser cutting machine TC 3030 with 4000-watt laser power will be in operation.

 

 

2006/2007 – Installation of further Trumpf laser cutting machines with 4000 W output

In June 2007, Mayer BT takes another step into the future. The production site in Hungary was further expanded with new laser machines from Trumpf. From November 2007, 2 Trumpf laser cutting machines TC 3030 with 3200-watt laser power and 1 Trumpf laser cutting machine TC 3030 with 4000-watt laser power will be in operation.

 

 

2007 - 2010

2007 – Four customer service centers for Germany 
To handle all the selling and service areas in Germany, four customer service centers in East, South, West and North are built.  

2010 – Foundation of the Mayer Holding GmbH & Co. KG 
With effect from January 1, 2010, Mayer Holding GmbH & Co. KG was founded. The shareholder and Managing Director of the Mayer Group, Mr. Klaus Mayer, will bundle all his company investments in the Mayer Holding. This holding company will be supported by a company advisory board with three well-known entrepreneurial personalities.

2010 – The Mayer Group is also breaking new ground in ecology 
In June 2010, a new photovoltaic plant with 227.68 kWp goes into operation. This ecological investment is an active contribution to environmental protection and CO2 savings. The delivery and installation was carried out by the company Palme Solar GmbH, located in Herbrechtingen/Bolheim. This means Mayer is independent of the general electricity supply companies in the long term and can generate electricity requirements themselves. On the photograph the entire system on the roofs of the company’s premises in Heidenheim-Mergelstetten can be seen.

2017 - 2018

2017/18 – Redesign of the office premises

In 2017/2018, it is time for a redesign of the office premises. A growing workforce requires a new office concept. Zebrano GmbH from GĂĽnzburg, Germany is commissioned to redesign the office and meeting rooms at the Heidenheim site. The use and combination of the materials wood, concrete and glass create a homely atmosphere, which at the same time convinces with a functional office concept.

2018

2018 – Manuel Linke becomes Managing Director
Since 2018, Manuel Linke has been responsible for the strategic orientation and operational business of Mayer Planting Systems and Mayer Laser & Sheet Metal Technology as Managing Director.
After his studies with a major in Business Information Systems (B.Sc.), Manuel Linke completed a part-time degree with a major in Business Psychology (M.Sc.). From 2012 to 2017, he worked as a project manager and assistant to the management at Paul Hartmann AG. Since 2017, Manuel Linke has been working for the Mayer Group and, until 2018, he accompanied a large number of projects in the various divisions as a project manager.

2018 - 2019

2018/19 – Expansion of the photovoltaic system at the Heidenheim site
Since 2010, solar cells have already covered the entire roof area of the factory and office building in Heidenheim. With a so-called energy façade, i.e. a large-scale traveling cladding of solar panels, the existing possibilities are being used to further expand the generation of renewable energies at the Heidenheim site. Today, the installed PV capacity is an impressive 665 kWp.  This enables a coverage of the own electricity demand of approx. 60% . In order to further reduce energy consumption, all light sources in production are being replaced by LED lights, both to further reduce electricity consumption and to take a further step towards a sustainable energy supply.

2019

2019 – Mayer Steel & Apparatus Engineering
The focus on innovations and a modern machine park has always been an important part of the company management. With the commissioning of the new BIMATEC SORALUCE mobile stand milling and drilling center FS 18000, the course is set for a successful future and the range of services is expanded. Large components up to 50 tons, which require high accuracy in machining, can now be machined with high precision.
The field of competence at the Heidenheim location is expanded by the conversion and leasing of a measuring hall to the company Bometric from Augsburg, Germany and the installation of a large portal measuring machine from the company Zeiss. From now on, customers are offered complete solutions from a single source – from consulting and production to quality control and delivery.
2019 – Mayer Steel & Apparatus Engineering
The focus on innovations and a modern machine park has always been an important part of the company management. 2019 – The Mayer machine configurator
As one of the pioneers in the horticultural industry, we have had an online machine configurator created for our customers for all our Mayer machines. This has now been successfully integrated on our Mayer Planting Systems homepage. From now on it is very easy to assemble your individual Mayer machine online, thanks to intuitive and clear handling.
2019 – The Mayer machine configurator
As one of the pioneers in the horticultural industry, we have had an online machine configurator created for our customers for all our Mayer machines. This has now been successfully integrated on our Mayer Planting Systems homepage. From now on it is very easy to assemble your individual Mayer machine online, thanks to intuitive and clear handling.
2019 – TASPO Awards 2019
On Friday, October 25, 2019, it was that time again. The horticultural trade journal TASPO invited for the 14th time to its TASPO Awards 2019 in Berlin, Germany.
Also this year we were present as partner and sponsor of the award in the category “Plant producer of the year”. Mr. Manuel Linke, Managing Director of Mayer Planting Systems, presented this year’s award to Da-Flora KG from Kevelaer for the marketing of its particularly bee-friendly and large-flowered Cuphea.
2019 – TASPO Awards 2019
On Friday, October 25, 2019, it was that time again. The horticultural trade journal TASPO invited for the 14th time to its TASPO Awards 2019 in Berlin, Germany.

2019 – 25th anniversary Mayer Hungary
The Mayer plant in Kisfalud, Hungary has now been in existence for more than 25 years. In the course of time, not only the number of employees has grown, but also the infrastructure and the machinery have changed considerably since May 1994. Reason enough to celebrate the 25th anniversary on site with all employees and many other guests. The anniversary celebration focused on the long history of the site’s development. While at the beginning there was only an office building and an assembly hall on the site, today there are modern production halls and office complexes. We’re looking forward to further investments and expansions in the future.

2019 – Naming of the “Georg Mayer Ăşt. 1”
The access road to the Mayer plant at the Kisfalud site is now officially named Georg Mayer Ăşt. 1 (transl. Georg Mayer street no. 1) – named after Klaus Mayer’s late father Mr. Georg Mayer.

2020

2020 – Award from the Ministry of the Environment as “Place Full of Energy”
The Ministry for the Environment, Climate and Energy Management has honored Mayer Steel & Apparatus Engineering as a “Place full of energy”. This award as part of the state government’s communication concept for the energy turnaround is given to selected individuals, groups, institutions and companies whose name and project stand for the actively practiced energy turnaround in the state.
“In our state, there are numerous places full of energy where exemplary, successful and exciting things are being done for the energy transition,” said Environment and Energy Minister Franz Untersteller during his tour of the traditional Swabian company. “The Mayer company is such a place. Environmental and energy considerations have been on the corporate agenda here for quite some time. This is worthy of all honor in the truest sense of the word.”

2020 – Establishment of the central Mayer marketing department
The Mayer Group now has its own marketing department. From now on, this is where the marketing initiatives for the Mayer Steel & Apparatus Engineering, Mayer Planting Systems, and Mayer Laser & Sheet Metal Technology divisions will be designed and driven forward.

2020 – New management at Mayer Steel & Apparatus Engineering
Effective March 01, 2020, Dipl. Ing. (FH) Martin Gentner has been appointed managing director of Mayer GmbH & CO. KG Steel & Apparatus Engineering. Mr. Gentner brings his many years of experience to the company, particularly in the areas of welding, mechanical processing and painting.
A mechanical engineer by  training, he previously worked for nine years as production and purchasing manager at a well-known mechanical engineering company. His vision is to be the preferred supplier of the European mechanical engineering industry, as well as to manage the latest machinery, coupled with experienced and motivated employees using all IT & Industry 4.0 topics.

2021 - Today

2021 – The Mayer Dealer Award
For the first time in the history of Mayer Planting Systems, the Mayer Dealer Award was presented this year. The award stands for outstanding performance and excellent service of our Mayer dealers and partners. With this recognition we will award our respective top dealer of the year from now on.

2021 – New photovoltaic plant
We are very pleased to announce the completion of the new photovoltaic plant on the roofs of our Mayer site in Kisfalud, Hungary. The plant generates approximately 275,000 – 290,000 kWh per year and will cover 35 – 45% of our on-site electricity needs in Kisfalud. 

Projects like these make a decisive contribution to the success of the energy transition. Not only because energy is used more efficiently, electricity is produced regeneratively and tons of CO² are saved – they should also serve as a source of inspiration and an example for our colleagues in industry to take this important step towards renewable energies.

2022 – Change of leadership at the top of the Mayer Group
In the Mayer Group, an era is coming to an end under the leadership of shareholder & managing director Klaus Mayer after 28 years. On January 01, 2022, Klaus Mayer will hand over the operational management of the Mayer Group to Manuel Linke. 

After the untimely death of his father Georg Mayer on December 02, 1993, his son Klaus Mayer took over the responsibility and management of the Mayer company as shareholder & managing director at the age of 28. After 28 years at the head of today’s Mayer Group, Klaus Mayer hands over the management of the Mayer Group to Mr. Manuel Linke. Mr. Linke will lead the Mayer Group from January 01, 2022 as Chairman of the Management Board in the spirit of the shareholder Klaus Mayer and his family.

2022 – New powder coating plant at the Hungary site
Our new powder coating plant for small and large components went into operation in January 2022 at our site in Hungary. Developed, planned and built by the company Meeh, the plant was optimally adapted to our needs and components. This enables us to provide cost-efficient production and powder-coat workpieces up to 6000 x 2500 x 2500 mm. 

2022 – Neue Pulverbeschichtungsanlage am Standort Ungarn
Unsere neue Pulverbeschichtungsanlage für Klein- und Großbauteile ist im Januar 2022 am Standort Ungarn in Betrieb genommen worden. Entwickelt, geplant und gebaut von der Firma Meeh, wurde die Anlage optimal auf unsere Bedürfnisse und Bauteile abgestimmt. So können wir eine kosteneffiziente Fertigung ermöglichen und Werkstücke bis 6000 x 2500 x 2500 mm pulverbeschichten. 

2022 – In silent mourning we bid farewell to Klaus Mayer, who passed away completely unexpected on October 06, 2022 at the age of 57. For his family, friends and the employees of the Mayer Group he leaves an unimaginable gap.

In 1993, at the age of only 28, he took over the responsibility and management of the Mayer company as shareholder & managing director. He tirelessly expanded the company in a forward-looking manner and developed it into today’s globally successful Mayer Group. At the beginning of 2022, after 28 years, he handed over the operational management of the Mayer Group to his successor Mr. Manuel Linke and from this point on held the office of Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Mayer Holding. Klaus Mayer was a visionary, mentor and entrepreneur through and through – fun-loving, sociable and always with a positive outlook. Family and friends were most important to him and he was always available to offer advice and support.

The Mayer Group, with its associated companies in Germany, Hungary and China, remains fully owned by the Mayer family in the fifth generation. This means that the strategic orientation of the Mayer Group will be consistently continued and that there will be no interference by third parties in the future.

2022 – In silent mourning we bid farewell to Klaus Mayer, who passed away completely unexpected on October 06, 2022 at the age of 57. For his family, friends and the employees of the Mayer Group he leaves an unimaginable gap.
