A modern, versatile pot-filling line was installed and successfully commissioned at Walls Nursery in Australia. The system is designed to efficiently and cost-effectively handle both specialized production processes – such as planting bulbous plants – and standard potting operations.
The installed line consists of the following main components:
- Potting machine TM 2400E
- Pot dispenser Potjet 2
- Bark topper RM 2120
- Irrigation tunnel WT 8000
- Soil feeding system with a 5-cubic-meter soil hopper
System design and operation
The system is primarily designed for processing bulb plants. In this specific process, the pots are first fed through the TM 2400E potting machine and pre-filled with only a small amount of substrate. This step ensures that there is sufficient space for manually inserting the bulb plants.
After the plants are placed in the pots, the pots are transported to the RM 2120. This machine then fills the pots completely with substrate, after which the filled pots pass through the WT 8000 irrigation tunnel to receive exactly the right amount of water – fully automated, efficient, and sustainable. Once this process is complete, the finished pots can be removed directly and processed further.
Features of the facility
A key feature of this pot-filling line is its sophisticated flexibility. Both the potting machine and the RM 2120 are designed to operate using the same growing medium when planting onion seedlings. This reduces changeover times, simplifies the material flow, and ensures consistently high quality throughout the production process.
In addition, the system offers the option of switching to traditional pot processes. In this case, the RM 2120 can alternatively be operated using conventional spreading material. This dual-use capability makes the entire line particularly versatile and enables customers to respond quickly to varying production requirements.
Benefits of using the Potjet 2
Another key advantage for Walls Nursery stems from the use of the Potjet 2. This system ensures reliable separation of the pots. When the pots are stored properly, a reuse rate of nearly 100% can be achieved. This leads to a significant reduction in material waste and contributes significantly to the overall cost-effectiveness of the system.
Conclusion
The pot-filling line installed at Walls Nursery stands out for its high flexibility, efficiency, and adaptability. In particular, the ability to perform both specialized bulb plant processes and traditional potting operations with minimal changeover effort represents significant added value. Combined with the high pot reuse rate achieved by the Potjet 2, this results in a high-performance and sustainable solution for modern horticultural operations.
